The room in the basement is turned into an audience, where often military training lessons for schoolchildren are carried out, soldiers are watching patriotic films here. Among Vardan’s photos is one where he smiles broadly. This photograph was taken by the Armenian-diaspora journalist from the newspaper “Droshak” on May 9, after the liberation of Shushi.

At the end of the interview the journalist asks: “What would you still like to add?”

– Everything will be fine! – Vardan said.

They tell that after the liberation of Shushi Vardan was found in the cemetery sprinkling wine on the tombstones and saying: “Rejoice, our ancestors! Shushi is liberated! ”

In 1983, after completing school with excellent grades, Vardan voluntarily goes to the military enlistment office and asks to send him to Afghanistan. There he served in the Airborne Troops Special Forces, returned with medals, among them – the medal “For Courage”.

In Artsakh, he fought in the battles for Kornidzor, Noyemberyan and Ijevan, Togh, Qarintak, Kerkezhan, liberated Lesnoy, Malibeyli, Gushchular, Khojaly, Shushi, Lisagor, Berdzor.

Mother Zarik remembers the last words of Vardan:

– He stopped at the library and for the first time addressed me by name: “Zarik, you are a strong woman! This library is to serve my people! ”

Today, the library is usedby both schoolchildren, and students.

Vardan Stepanyan’s mother asked to thank through our newspaper Edgar Zakaryan and his team for their conscientious work, for the repair of the house-museum.
